Enrolment at Whatawhata School!

Our Enrolment scheme/Out of Zone Enrolment

We have an enrolment scheme in place due to the rapid growth in our area.

Enrolment at the school is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available from the school office.

Because the board operates an enrolment scheme, it is required to fill any vacant out-of-zone places by ballot in cases where there are more applications for enrolment than there are places available.

The Board of Whatawhata School is inviting Out of Zone applications for students starting school in Term 1 and 2, 2026.

First Enrolment Period

27 January 2026 – 3 July 2026 - please note that for year 1 students we are a ‘Cohort Entry’ school.

Places available for ballot:

• 7 Year 1 places (students turning 5 during the enrolment period)
• 3 Year 4 places
• 1 Year 7 place (Reo Rua)

Because Whatawhata School operates an enrolment scheme, any vacant out-of-zone places must be filled by ballot if the number of applications exceeds the number of available places.

Applications close: 3:00 pm, Tuesday 21 October 2025

Ballot date (if required): 10:00 am, Wednesday 22 October 2025

We are a Cohort Entry School

Cohort entry is where children start school for the first time in groups on set dates, rather than on or after their fifth birthday.

Why Cohort Entry?

  • It allows students to settle quickly into school, with their peers.

  • Evidence shows that starting school alongside others can help foster relationships and support a smoother entry to school life.

  • Less disruption for class teachers as they can plan for groups of students visiting in preparation for starting school and their first day of school.

  • This creates a structured transition from Early Childcare to school.

  • Allows for easier planning of staffing requirements and physical classroom space.

Starting school as part of a group has lots of benefits for children. They often feel less anxious and settle more quickly when they start together with other new children.

Traditionally in New Zealand, children have started school on or shortly after their fifth birthday. Many still do, but now some schools are using cohort entry with students starting in groups.
