cohort entry

At Whatawhata School, we use cohort entry for children starting school for the first time. This means children begin together as a group on set dates throughout the year. Starting alongside other new learners helps tamariki build friendships, develop a sense of belonging and settle into school routines.

How does it work?

• There are two entry dates each term

  • Term 1 – between 26 January and 9 February or 9 March

  • Term 2 – 20 April or 2 June.

  • Term 3 – 20 July or 24 August.

  • Term 4 – 12 October or 16 November.

• Your child can start on a cohort entry date on or after their fifth birthday.

• You may choose a later cohort date if your child needs more time, but all children must start school by their sixth birthday.

Please contact our school office well before your child turns five to discuss enrolment, confirm their start date and find out about school visits. We look forward to working alongside your whaanau to support a positive start.
