Whatawhata School Values

Everything the school does is based on our six core values of respect, curiosity, perseverance, mana, resilience and aroha. These are modelled, developed and celebrated throughout the school.

Resilience

“I embrace the challenges of life”

Resilience is being able to deal with things when they go wrong. It means embracing life’s difficulties with courage and patience and refusing to give up. By showing resilience we become stronger and better able to deal with the ups and downs of life. Resilience also allows us to lean on each other for help when we need it.

Respect

"I care about the people, things and places in my life"

Respect is caring about people, things and places. When you show respect people know you care for them and value their ideas and beliefs. You follow rules so everyone can be happy. You value the objects and places around you. When you show respect, others respect you.

Aroha

“I care for myself and those around me”

Aroha helps us feel connected with each other and to value the specialness of each person. It is treating people with thoughtfulness and kindness and doing something good to make life better for others. With aroha, we can accomplish more together than any one of us could alone.

Perseverance

“I keep going even when things get tough”

Perseverance is showing determination and persistence. When you persevere, you don't give up, you just keep going. It's about getting through the difficult times where you feel uncomfortable or confused in order to reach your goals. When you persevere, you feel a real sense of pride.

Mana

“I am proud of myself. I’m a role model to others”

Mana is the special talents you are born with and the honour and responsibilities that others give you. You grow in mana by having pride in what you can do without being boastful. You share your talents with others and they look up to you in return. You relish the responsibilities you are given and complete them to the best of your ability.

Curiosity

“I am excited about the world around me”

Curiosity is the power of imagination. It is discovering your own special talents. Dare to see things in new ways and find different ways to solve problems. With curiosity, you can discover something new about the world or yourself. New discoveries create excitement and a desire to find out more.
