Welcome to Whatawhata School

Nau mai, haere mai. We are a small rural school of around 260 children just outside Hamilton at the heart of the Whatawhata Community. Our Vision is To Grow, To Achieve, To Care. We look to develop the whole child, empowering them to succeed in learning and life. What this looks like is captured in our Guiding Principles.

Our school curriculum is built around this vision, where we support children to enjoy learning the knowledge, skills, principles and values that help them to meet all the different challenges and opportunities that life brings. Our curriculum teaches all our children both learning and life skills. Our staff are committed to providing the best education for all our learners. Our size and collaborative focus mean we are able to develop an in-depth knowledge of their interests, strengths and needs which allows us to shape our programmes accordingly.

Many describe our school as like “a big family”. Children develop into community members who ensure that, young and old, we all care for, support and value each other. We enjoy close relationships with our families, whaanau and the wider community.

We are a proud PB4L school and build a positive culture and environment around our values - We are Kind - Adventurous - Responsible - United. Our mascot, Karu, and her family help us with this.

Over the last few years the school has invested heavily in modernising the classrooms, learning resources and environment. We will soon be adding 4 more classrooms and completing major upgrades of two more of our spaces. We enjoy an exciting, modern learning and play environment.

The school is currently enjoying significant growth. However, we are committed to valuing and maintaining the unique opportunities and values of small and rural school learning.

I hope the information contained here provides all you need to fully understand the school.
